2023 Mercedes-AMG GLC 63: what is it?

We’ve already spotted the regular GLC, Mercedes-Benz’s popular midsize SUV, being given the shakedown by development drivers, and as sure as night follows day here comes the range-topping potent model.

Despite the heavy camouflage we know it’s the AMG model thanks to the quad exhausts, lower ride height, wider track, bigger wheels and bigger brakes. The trademark AMG Panamericana grille is also impossible to miss.

While our snappers haven’t managed to snatch a frame of the interior yet, the new GLC range will get a similar interior to the new C-Class saloon, being based on the same platform. That means it will come with an 11.9-inch portrait-style infotainment system, but we can also expect plenty of sporty AMG trim flourishes specific to the GLC 63, such as alloy pedals and a bespoke steering wheel.

2023 Mercedes-AMG GLC 63: what is it powered by?

This is the controversial bit. Full-fat AMG models are starting to ditch the familiar, sonorous V8 engine and replacing it with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Mercedes has confirmed that’s the case for the next generation of the C 63 super saloon, so it will almost certainly be the same for the GLC 63.

We can even spot the charging port on the left-hand side if this test mule, so we’re pretty comfortable betting on both cars being powered in the same way.

This means shove will come from the same 2.0-litre turbocharged engine already found in the Mercedes-AMG A 45 where it produces a frankly staggering 421hp, but with the help of an electric motor overall power will rise to 643hp. That’s a significant hike over the current model, which knocks out 510hp in the most powerful S version.

It’s too early to expect any 0-62mph times or electric range figures from Mercedes, but we’ll keep you posted.

2023 Mercedes-AMG GLC 63: when will it be on sale?

You’ll have to be patient unfortunately. The new standard GLC is still in the testing phases, and the AMG version almost always comes later, so we don’t think we’ll see the finished product until late next year.

2023 Mercedes-AMG GLC 63: how much will it cost?

Hybrid technology is generally pretty expensive, so it’s reasonable to imagine the price of the 2023 GLC 63 will be more than the current model’s starting price of around £75,000 in standard form. It’s likely entry versions will be closer to the current S model, which costs around £85,000.
