2022 Mercedes-AMG S63e: what is it?

If the Mercedes S-Class is the pinnacle of the Mercedes range, the Mercedes-AMG S63e will be near the top of its own tree.

It's the performance luxury version of Merc's most luxurious saloon, which is marked out clearly in these spy pictures with its more aggressive look.

That includes things like a sportier body kit, vertical-slat grille, AMG alloy wheels, an upgraded braking system and quad exhaust pipes.

2022 Mercedes-AMG S63e: what is it powered by?

While other AMG models such as the C63 are losing V8 power, the S63e is keeping it – although with the addition of electric power.

That's right, the S63e is very likely to have Merc's twin-turbo V8 petrol engine paired with an electric motor to produce more than 700hp. An automatic gearbox and all-wheel drive will also be standard.

It'll also have a small battery and will be able to be charged from a plug for extended periods of electric driving too.

There are also rumours of an even more powerful version of this engine and an electric motor in a model that could be called the S73e. 800hp could be on offer there.

2022 Mercedes-AMG S63e: when will it be on sale?

We don't have confirmed on-sale dates for the Mercedes-AMG S63e just yet, but given the S-Class has been on sale in lesser forms in the UK for some time and these test mules are at a late stage we think it'll come early in 2022.

2022 Mercedes-AMG S63e: how much will it cost?

The Mercedes S-Class is not a cheap car in its standard form, but when AMG gets involved things start to get very pricey. We think a starting price of around £130,000 is a safe bet.
