2022 Maserati Grecale Trofeo: what is it?

The Grecale is a new midsize SUV on its way from Maserati. It will sit below the Levante in the line-up and share much of its DNA with the Alfa Romeo Stelvio. It will be a rival to premium midsize SUVs like the Porsche Macan

The Grecale Trofeo is the range-topping hot version: ‘Trofeo’ is to Maserati what AMG is to Mercedes or M is to BMW. What gives it away as a brawny Trofeo-badged Maserati are the bigger brakes and bulky red brake callipers. The exhaust pipes are also different to those we’ve seen on test mules of the regular Grecale, which are rounded instead of the rectangular pipes seen here.

Finally, our spy photographers have told us it sounds very different to the standard car, reporting a much deeper, angrier sound as it rumbled past them.

2022 Maserati Grecale Trofeo: what is it powered by?

That’s the million-dollar question. Current Trofeo Maseratis - the Levante, Ghibli and Quattroporte - use a Ferrari-derived 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V8, but it’s unlikely it will find its way to the Grecale.

It’s more likely to be given the same 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged V6 unit currently used in the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio, where it produces a very tasty 505hp and 600Nm of torque.

Some internet chatter is suggesting it might be powered by the 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged V6 which is the beating heart of the new Maserati MC20 supercar, but that’s almost certainly wishful thinking.

2022 Maserati Grecale Trofeo: when will be on sale?

We expect to see the finished version of the Grecale, and probably the Grecale Trofeo, before the end of 2021, which means you should be able to order one early 2022.

2022 Maserati Grecale Trofeo: how much will it cost?

Maserati hasn’t commented on prices for the Grecale range yet, but we can expect them to be similar to its main rival, the Porsche Macan. The GTS is the Macan range-topper, which costs £65,000. But as the Grecale Trofeo will likely be more powerful than the GTS it could be as much as £70,000.
