2022 BMW M2 Competition: what is it?

The BMW M2 launched as one of the greatest M cars of all time – quite the accolade for a relatively new model in the famed marque’s history. Its combination of compact proportions, muscular looks, excellent handling dynamics, and punchy performance made for quite the cocktail.

We’ve caught what appears to be the all-new BMW M2 testing at the Nurburgring. Flared arches, racing seats, and big exhausts betray this prototype’s camouflage. Just like the BMW M3 and M4, it’s likely that the UK will only get the more potent Competition model. In the case of those bigger cars, that meant no manual gearbox option.

2022 BMW M2 Competition: what is it powered by?

We’d expect the next-generation BMW M2 Competition to be powered by the same twin-turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine as before. Power will likely increase from 404bhp to around 440bhp.

Performance will be sent exclusively to the rear wheels via a ZF automatic transmission, although we still live in hope that there will be a 6-speed manual option on the table. We predict a 0-62mph sprint of close to 4 seconds.

2022 BMW M2 Competition: when will it be on sale?

This is the first time we have seen the car testing, but the talented M division doesn’t need long to work their magic. However, it’s probably a bit optimistic to expect a 2021 release.

A reveal next year with cars arriving part way through 2022 is the most likely scenario.

2022 Tesla Model S Plaid+: how much will it cost?

Pricing is pure speculation at this point in time, but considering the cost of the outgoing BMW M2 Competition, a £55k price tag seems reasonable.

There’s also a strong likelihood of a more hardcore CS model later in the life of this all-new M2.
